Holidays are time for cheer and safetyThe holidays are fast approaching, but as the pace quickens it's also a good time to take a moment to remember some important safety considerations when traveling. As of Monday, Dec. 4, Illinois had 1,162 motor vehicle fatalities for 2006 - a drop of 114 fatalities compared to the same period in 2005, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The state is on the verge of setting a record for having the fewest fatalities since 1924. There have been 255 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year. There have been 482 fatalities where restraints such as seat belts were not used or improperly used, compared with 286 fatalities where restraints were in place. The data does not include statistics where restraint usage is unknown, such as emergency personnel arriving before police and restraint usage is not reported. With these sobering thoughts in mind, please drive safely to your destinations this holiday season by buckling up, do not drink and drive, avoid distractions while driving, and obey speed limits.
