The SIUC Jazz Combos, under the direction of coordinator Philip Brown, an associate professor in the SIUC School of Music, perform at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is free.
More than 75 regional artisans are expected this week at the 29th annual Holiday Craft Sale, Thursday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Student Center. The sale is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Items will be on display in the Student Center Hall of Fame and International Lounge areas at the Student Center. Admission is free. The Egyptian Suzuki School winter recital, featuring piano and string recitals begins at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. The recital is under the direction of Paula Melton Allison, an assistant instructor in the SIUC School of Music. Donations are accepted at the door for the scholarship fund.
Don Fixico, a distinguished foundation professor in the history department at Arizona State University, presents a lecture on "Indian Lives during the Eisenhower Years,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Student Center’s Ohio Room. Fixico discusses governmental policies toward Native Americans during the Eisenhower Administration of the 1950s that resulted in many Native Americans being forced into urban areas of the country. Admission is free. The event is part of Native American Heritage Month.
The Playwrights Thesis Play Festival, featuring works of SIUC graduate students, runs Thursday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 2, in the Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater. "Verse Chorus Verse,” is performed at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 1. "Summer of the Wolf,” will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens, and $6 for students. One ticket includes admission to both productions. Box office hours are noon-5:30 p.m. weekdays and an hour before each performance. The theater and box office are in the Communications Building on campus. A double bill of thought-provoking performances highlights The Kleinau Theatre stage Thursday, Nov. 29, through Saturday, Dec. 1. "Drowning a Diary: Revisioning Virginia Woolf,” and "Ana and Mia: A (Dis)ordered Life,” will be shown nightly. Performances begin at 8 p.m. General admission is $7, with student admission at $5. Tickets are on sale at the Kleinau Theatre Box Office, on the second floor of the Communications Building, one hour before show time. To reserve tickets, call 618/453-5618.
"Art Over Easy 3,” the major fund-raiser for the School of Art and Design, begins at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, in the Glove Factory’s Surplus Gallery. The exhibit features ceramics, prints, paintings, glass, jewelry, photographs, sculpture and fiber art created by faculty members, graduate students, undergraduates, alumni, and community artists. A silent auction runs from 6:30 to 10 p.m., with a live auction beginning at 8:30 p.m. All proceeds go to the new building fund and scholarship fund.
The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra presents its first sing-along version of the portion of Christmas portion of Handel’s masterpiece with "Sing-Along Messiah,” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, at Shryock Auditorium. SIUC School of Music Professor Jeanine F. Wagner, and assistant professor David A. Dillard, along with SIUC alumnus Randall Black are the featured soloists. Everyone is welcome to attend whether you sing or just listen. Admission is $15 for the general public; $6 for students of any age.
The football Salukis host UMass in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I football championships at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at McAndrew Stadium. This is the third straight year the Salukis, 11-1, have advanced to the quarterfinals. Ticket prices are $19 for adults and $6 for students — college students, high school and under.
"Opera Scenes,” from The Marjorie Lawrence Opera Theater, will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. The performance is under the direction of Timothy J. Fink, an associate professor in SIUC's School of Music. Admission is free.
Noted cellist Klaus Heitz headlines a performance of The Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship on Parrish Lane in Carbondale. The group holds several concerts a year with the dual purpose of promoting chamber music in the greater Carbondale area and raising money for music scholarships to the University. Last year, the group awarded $17,000, helping at least nine SIUC students with scholarships. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $3 for students.
"Look Both Ways,” will be shown at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, in Davis Auditorium (Wham 105) as part of the University Honors Program’s International Film Series. Admission is free.
The SIUC Wind Ensemble under the direction of conductor Christopher L. Morehouse, an assistant professor in the School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $7.50 for the general public; $3 for students, senior citizens 60 and older, and children 15 and younger.
Students from the School of Music will perform classical music for babies through pre-kindergarten children in Klassics for Kids, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Altgeld Hall, Room 112. Performances are free.
