Looking to a future of promise -- Chancellor Walter V. Wendler discusses the future relationships between SIUC and Cairo Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Fort Defiance State Park during dedication ceremonies of "Proceeding On," an elevated compass-styled sculpture commemorating the journey 200 years ago of famed explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. In mid-November 1803, the pair’s expedition spent five days at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers gathering data and beginning the process of mapping the river route to the Pacific Ocean.
