Women assistant professors may seek award

Women assistant professors at SIUC are encouraged to apply for the 2006-2007 "Joint Women's Studies and University Professional Advancement Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity Awards."

Winners will receive up to $600 to cover expenses related to scholarship that are not typically covered by departments or grants such as research-related travel, computer hardware and software. Equipment will remain the property of SIUC on loan to the applicant.

"Women's Studies and University Professional Advancement have co-sponsored these awards recognizing women's scholarship for years," said M. Joan McDermott, director of the women's studies center. "Both units have the goal of promoting women's research, scholarly and creative activities."

Applicants must submit a proposal that describes their work. This program is designed primarily to fund new applicants. Only one submission may be made by an individual and/or team. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated based on the following criteria: purpose or relevance of research, enhancement of professional development, need or justification and completeness of proposal.

To request an application or for more information, call Women's Studies at 618/453-5141 or email Joan McDermott.
