NotableFaculty from the College of Education and Human Services have scored some hits with the publication of a book and a journal article. Elaine T. Jurkowski, associate professor in the School of Social Work, has written a textbook titled "Policy and Program Planning for Older Adults: Realities and Visions." Springer Publishing Co. released the 424-page book along with an 84-page instructor's guide in August. Amazon.com's editorial review describes it as "an excellent primary text for policy courses within gerontology certificate and degree programs as it builds students' understanding of policy development through a critical analysis and review of policy frameworks and the policy implementation process." It also covers skills and coalition building, health promotion, and community-based programs and services. Jurkowski, who joined the faculty in 1998, is a two-degree graduate of the University of Manitoba, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in social work in 1980 and 1986 respectively. She earned her doctorate in 1997 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Francie K. Shafer, a doctoral student and instructor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is second author on an article titled "Teaching to multiple intelligences by following a ‘slime trail'" published in the refereed Middle School Journal. Issued five times yearly as the major publication for the National Middle School Association, the journal focuses on topics related to the education and development of young people between the ages of 10 and 15. Shafer is a two-degree graduate of SIUC, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in 1972 and 1995 respectively. She hopes to finish her doctorate this semester and go through graduation in May. |
