Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke presents the 2007 Jeanne Hurley Simon Lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Student Center Ballroom D. Admission is free and the lecture is open to the public. The Jeanne Hurley Simon Lecture Series honors Public Policy Institute founder Paul Simon's first wife, Jeanne, who died in February 2000. The series brings in prestigious speakers in the field of politics, government and other vital issues.
The feature documentary, "The Believers," which examines faith, gender and religion, will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Student Center's Missouri-Kaskaskia rooms. A discussion follows. Admission is free. The event is part of GLBT History Month.
The SIUC Wind Ensemble, under the direction of conductor Christopher L. Morehouse, an assistant professor in the School of Music, presents its annual fall band concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $7,50 for the general public; $3 for students of any age.
George Schedler, professor and chair in SIUC's Department of Philosophy, presents "A Conflict in Mill's ‘On Liberty,'" at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in Faner Hall, room 2059. The lecture is part of the Department of Philosophy's Colloquium Series. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Egyptian Suzuki School, under the direction of Paula Melton Allison, an assistant instructor in SIUC's School of Music, performs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Scholarship fund donations are accepted.
Former major league baseball umpire Dave Pallone, author of the 1990 autobiography, "Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball," presents a lecture, "Who's Really on First?" at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in Student Center Ballroom D. The event is part of GLBT History Month. Admission is free.
"Police-Citizen Interaction: Know Your Rights," a panel discussion focusing on a person's rights when stopped by police is at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Hiram H. Lesar Law School Building, room 204. Program speakers are: James Garofalo, professor, SIUC's Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency and Corrections; Cyril D. Robinson, professor emeritus, SIUC's Center for the Study of Crime, Delinquency and Corrections; William A. Schroeder, professor, SIU School of Law; Ed Dorsey, an attorney with the Carbondale chapter of the NAACP, and Todd D. Sigler, director, SIUC Department of Public Safety. The event is open to the public; admission is free.
The Saluki football team — ranked No. 9 in this week's The Sports Network FCS Top 25 Media Poll — hosts Missouri State in the 2007 Saluki Family Weekend game at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at McAndrew Stadium. Tickets are $19 for prime reserved seats and $15 for all other reserved and general admission seats; $8 for high school students and younger. SIUC student tickets are free at gates 3 and 4 with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.
