Coming events

 

The film, "The Aggressives," will be shown at 7 p.m., today, Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Student Center's Illinois Room. A discussion will follow. GLBT History Month and Latino Heritage Month are sponsoring the event.

 

Celebrate National Coming Out Day at SIUC on Thursday, Oct. 11, with "Shirts and Sharpies" Day. SIUC students and allies will wear plain white shirts labeled with the words, "I'm Out," or "Ally." Community members are invited to show their support by using sharpies to write words of encouragement on the shirts. The event is part of GLBT History Month.

 

A free workshop for Safe Zone — Ally Training, which identifies faculty, staff and students who can provide support and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) students, faculty and staff. The workshop is 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Student Center's Mackinaw Room. Participating as a GLBTQ ally helps create a campus that is inclusive and affirming.

 

"The Blue Man Group: How to be a Megastar 2.1 Live," hits the SIU Arena stage at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Ticket prices are $85 and $49.50. Tickets may be ordered through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849, at any Ticketmaster outlet, or in person SIU Arena ticket office or the Student Center central ticket office.

 

Miklos Koren, a visiting lecturer in Economics at Princeton University, presents a lecture on "Import and Productivity" as part of the Fall 2007 Vandeveer Speaker Series on Friday, Oct. 12. The lecture is at 3 p.m. in Faner Hall, room 4135.

 

"Maroon Madness" takes to the SIU Arena basketball court beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12. The Saluki men's basketball team showcases the start of the 2007-2008 season with a dunk contest, 3-point contest, and scrimmage. The ESPN family of networks will also be present, and portions of the event will air during a two-hour special later that night. Admission is free. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the general public. The Dawg Pound members will be admitted at 5:30 p.m.

 

Professor Hans Joas, director of the Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural Studies at Universität Erfurt, and member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, delivers the keynote speech for Building Bridges and presents the Fall 2007 Wayne Leys Memorial Lecture at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12, in the Student Center's Ohio Room. Admission is free.

 

The School of Art and Design hosts the Fall 2007 Saturday Young Artists' Workshop Art Show, "Far Away Art," Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Allyn Building, outside room 102. A reception is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. The art show features artworks by children in kindergarten through seventh grade from the Carbondale area.

 

The fourth annual "Inspiring Women of Achievement" gala is Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Student Center Ballrooms and International Lounge. The evening begins with a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program. The program generates funds for scholarship endowments at SIUC. The 2007 Inspiring Women of Achievement are: Rosemary Berkel Crisp of Marion, Dr. Ella Phillips Lacy of Carbondale, Dr. Marsha Garwin Ryan of Carbondale, and Barbara Walton Throgmorton of Anna. The Margaret H. Steele Scholarship will be presented to Jordana Janelle Pulliam of Harrisburg, and Jennifer Diane Tanner of Marion. The 2007 Alumna Achievement Award will go to J. Adaire Putnam, President of Perspectives Research, Saugutuk, MI. She is a graduate of the College of Business and Administration. Recipients of the Inspiring Women Scholarship are Natalie Elise McLean of Anna, Michelle Rene Restivo of Energy, Samantha Marie Simpson of Carterville, and Danielle Ann Spratt of Oregon. The closing ceremony of Latino Heritage Month 2007, "Friends and Neighbors — Hispanic Community Outreach," is at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, at the St. Francis Xavier Church, 303 S. Poplar St., Carbondale.

 

Catherine Bertini, the former head of the United Nations World Food Programme, presents the Gil and Jean Kroening Lecture, at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, in the Student Center Ballroom B. The lecture is free and the public is invited. Bertini is a professor of Public Administration with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. In June, Bertini joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Agricultural Development team as a senior fellow.

 

A workshop on defining terminology, dispelling myths and challenging homophobia, "More Similarities Than Differences," is at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Student Health Center Auditorium. The event is free, and part of GLBT History Month.

 

The SIUC Concert Choir, under the direction of Susan Davenport, an assistant professor in the School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the First Christian Church, the corner of University Avenue and Malone Street in Carbondale. Admission is free.

 

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke presents the 2007 Jeanne Hurley Simon Lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Student Center Ballroom D. Admission is free and the lecture is open to the public. The Jeanne Hurley Simon Lecture Series honors Public Policy Institute founder Paul Simon's first wife, Jeanne, who died in February 2000. The series brings in prestigious speakers in the field of politics, government and other vital issues.

 

The feature documentary, "The Believers," which examines faith, gender and religion, will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Student Center's Missouri-Kaskaskia rooms. A discussion follows. Admission is free. The event is part of GLBT History Month.

 

The SIUC Wind Ensemble under the direction of conductor Christopher L. Morehouse, an assistant professor in the School of Music, presents its annual fall band concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $7,50 for the general public; $3 for students of any age.
