Brown to deliver Tenney Distinguished Lecture

Father Joseph A. Brown, director of Black American Studies at SIUC, will deliver the University's Charles D. Tenney lecture at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Student Center Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow his talk. The events are free and open to the public.

The University Honors Program sponsors the Tenney Distinguished Lectures. Tenney served as the University's provost and vice president from 1952 to 1971.

"An Evening with Father Brown" will include readings from Brown's collections of poetry. He is the author of a book of poetry, "Accidental Grace," and four books on black theology and literature.

Brown is a lecturer in African and African-American spirituality as well as African-American history and culture.

Brown earned a bachelor's degree from St. Louis University in 1968, a master's degree from John Hopkins University in 1969, and a second master's as well as a doctorate from Yale University in 1983 and 1984, respectively.
