Coming events'Shabuya,' a senior thesis film by SIUC alumnus Mario Contreras — following the Freedom Ride of migrant workers to offices of Illinois congressional leaders in Washington, D.C., will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the Student Center's Ohio Room. A discussion follows. The event is free, and is part of Latino Heritage Month.
The Global Media Research Center sponsors a presentation by Jane C. Park, an assistant professor of Ethic Studies Honors College at the University of Oklahoma, at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, in Communications Building, Room 1032. Park's lecture, Oriental Style: Representations of the Asiatic in Hollywood Action Genre Films," looks at the portrayal of Asians in Hollywood action films. The event is free, and open to the public.
Dorothy Rasinski Gregory, one of the nation's pioneers in health law and bio-ethics, delivers the 2007 Dr. Arthur Grayson Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 20. The lecture is at 5 p.m. in the SIU School of Law auditorium. She is presenting "Ethics — Law — Medicine: A Vibrant Relationship (Personal Reflections)" Admission is free and open to the public.
The Saluki women's volleyball team hosts Evansville at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, at Davies Gym. Tickets are $5 for adults; $3 for faculty, staff, senior citizens and kids. SIUC student tickets are free with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.
The Saluki cross country team hosts the annual Saluki Invitational beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22. The 5,000 meters women's race begins at 10 a.m.; the 8,000 men's race begins at 10:45 a.m.
The Saluki football team hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at McAndrew Stadium. The Salukis are ranked No. 7 in The Sports Network's Top 25 FCS poll this week. Tickets are $19 for prime reserved seats and $15 for all other reserved and general admission seats; $8 for high school students and younger. SIUC student tickets are free at gates 3 and 4 with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.
Paul Transue, an assistant professor in SIUC's School of Music, and San-Ky Kim, an assistant professor of voice at Texas Christian University, are holding a free recital at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall.
The Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society holds a performance at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane, Carbondale. The recital includes performances by Joseph Breznikar, a professor in SIUC's School of Music, along with the School of Music's string faculty and students. Admission is $15 for the general public; $3 for students. Tickets are available at the door.
A free ice cream social to honor Latino Heritage Month and promote cross cultural awareness and interaction is set for 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, in the lower level of Grinnell Hall.
Acclaimed writer Luis A. Urrea — a 2005 Pulitzer Price finalist for non-fiction — presents the keynote lecture for Latino Heritage Month at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Student Center Auditorium. Urrea is a member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame. The event is free, and the public is invited.
The Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra presents — Great Music and Barta — at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Shryock Auditorium. Michael Barta, a professor in SIUC's School of Music and a finalist in the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition, will perform, Admission is $19 for the general public; $6 for SIUC students with a valid SIUC student I.D.
The Global Media Research Center sponsors a presentation by documentarian Bennie Klain of Trickster Films, at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, and Thursday, Sept. 27 in Browne Auditorium (Parkinson 124). Klain presents several screenings of his films, including "Return of the Navajo Boy," "Yada, Yada," "Weaving Worlds," and "Share the Wealth." The event is free, and open to the public.
