SIUC Zoologist George H. Waring is the recipient of the 2005 Animal Behavior Society's Distinguished Teaching Award. The announcement came at the society's annual conference, Aug. 6-10, in Snowbird, Utah.
Professor Waring is one of the society's founding fathers.
"He's taught a variety of undergraduate animal behavior-related courses at SIUC for 38 years. He has an excellent reputation for teaching and also for inspiring his students," Penny L. Bernstein, a representative of the society, notes in an award letter.
The letter went on to praise Waring for …"the popularity of your textbook on horses and your continuing efforts to use up-to-date techniques in teaching."
The Animal Behavior Society is a non-profit scientific society, founded to encourage and promote the study of animal behavior.

Three employees from the SIUC medical school -- Dr. Erica Nelson, associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology, Christopher Rector, webmaster in obstetrics and gynecology, and Kathryn Kucera, nurse in medical education -- were honored with the Web site of excellence award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. The award is given to the Web site for medical student clerkship that is comprehensive, well organized and easy to navigate.

Kathy Mahaffey, chief operating officer for SIU Physicians & Surgeons, was elected president-elect of Academic Practice Assembly (APA) of the Medical Group Management Association at their annual conference in New York City in April.
