Distinguished Organ Recital Series is Sept. 15Ben van Oosten, organist at the Grote Kerk in The Hague, will perform a free concert on campus later this month. van Oosten performs at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15, in Shryock Auditorium. The performance is part of the Marianne Webb and David N. Bateman Distinguished Organ Recital series. The concert is free. A pre-concert buffet menu dinner is set for 5:30-7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms. The dinner costs $15. The dinner includes admission to a special section of seating for the recital. Reservations are due by Monday, Sept. 11, and are available by calling 618/453-2466. The recital marks the 35th anniversary of the Reuter pipe organ, named in Webb's honor in 2001. Appointed to SIUC's faculty in 1965, Webb is a distinguished University organist and visiting professor in the School of Music, which is in the College of Liberal Arts. van Oosten has performed worldwide and received acclaim as a virtuoso performing artist and scholar since giving his debut recital in 1970 when he was 15 years old. He is a professor of music at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. Lynn M. Trapp, the series' principal artistic director, will give an informational presentation on the artist and the concert program during the dinner. Trapp graduated with an organ degree from SIUC, and earned his doctorate from the University of Kansas. Beyond his notability as an organist, he is an internationally recognized composer and choral conductor. He serves as director of worship and music and organist at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
