Civil Service sick leave policy revised

SIUC has implemented three significant revisions in sick leave policies all geared to offer Carbondale employees more benefits. SIUC Chancellor Walter V. Wendler said the changes went into effect July 1 for all non-represented Civil Service employees. Essentially they expand the number of paid days available under extended sick leave and also allow the extended sick leave to be used for family members, not just the employee.

The changes apply to only non-represented Civil Service employees and are more closely aligned with benefits already held by Administrative/Professional staff. The University will address changes for represented Civil Service Employees through collective bargaining, said Human Resources Director Kathleen M. Blackwell.

Changes:

  • Remove the requirement to expend five- or 10 days of an employees' own accrued leave prior to receiving the extended sick leave benefit.
  • Allow for intermittent use of extended sick leave.
Allow for absences that qualify for Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave to be eligible for extended sick leave benefits with proper documentation. Human Resources must approve the leave for the employee to receive the extended sick leave benefit for an injury or illness of an immediate family member under FMLA guidelines. This includes a spouse, domestic partner, child or parent.

More information on the revised sick leave policy is available through Human Resources or by calling the office at 618/453-6668.
