Medical school wins three Telly Awards

The Educational Media Group (EMG) at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has won three bronze Telly Awards in this year's national competition.  The Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding TV commercials and programs as well as video and film productions.

The SIU-produced programs being honored include the monthly "Hometown Housecall” television series.  It is broadcast on several public broadcasting stations including Network Knowledge in Springfield, Macomb and Quincy and WSIU-TV in Carbondale.  The series is hosted by Dr. Stuart Frank, a cardiologist and professor emeritus of internal medicine, who brings together colleagues from SIU School of Medicine to talk about important medical topics.

This is the fourth year for the series, which features three topics and various speakers in each program.  The winning episode featured discussions about the new cervical cancer vaccine, preventing colorectal cancer and cochlear implants.  The fourth season is funded by the SimmonsCooperCancer Institute and the School of Medicine's Rural Health Initiative. 

The production staff for the Hometown Housecall series are Phillip V. Davis, associate provost of external and health affairs, executive producer; Ann Hamilton, director of continuing medical education, producer; Patricia Stice, TV director/producer, and Sue Tin, TV writer/producer, segment producer.

Tellys also were awarded for "The Doctors of Prairie, the Families of Prairie” and "Prairie Diagnostic Center: A Patient's Introduction,” both produced for Prairie Cardiovascular Consultants (PCC) in Springfield.  Tin was producer and writer for both productions.

In the first program, current PCC physicians and their spouses do the talking in this physician recruitment DVD.  The second video for PCC is an informational piece aimed at educating patients and family members about heart catheter procedures performed at the Prairie Diagnostic Center.
