NotableAn SIUC researcher is receiving an award from the Journal of Financial Research as co-author of the publication's 2006 Outstanding Article. Honors go to Ike Mathur, Henry J. Rehn professor of finance in the College of Business and Administration, along with Kimberly C. Gleason of Florida Atlantic University and Roy A. Wiggins, III of Bentley College, for their article "The Use of Acquisitions and Joint Ventures by U.S. Banks Expanding Abroad." The Winter 2006 issue included Mathur's co-authored article, now named the best work published during the entire year. The article examines international bank expansions as they occur in developed or developing markets. The first place award provides a $750 cash prize. It was also recently announced that Mathur, an SIUC faculty member since 1977, will be managing editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance, a highly respected world economic and financial research publication, beginning Jan. 1, 2008. Mathur has served as interim dean, chair of the Department of Finance and director of doctoral programs while at SIUC and has authored or co-authored more than 110 articles and numerous books. Mathur was a Fulbright professor of international business at Turku School of Economics in Finland in 1983 and a decade later was Fulbright professor of international finance at Portuguese Catholic University in Portugal. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University and his doctoral degree from the University of Cincinnati.
Timothy Koschmann, associate professor of medical education at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, has been awarded a two-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, a division of the National Institutes of Health, for a study to examine clinical competency of medical students. Total budget for the grant is $144,500. The focus of the study is the development of practical examinations that can be used to measure the clinical capabilities of medical students and resident physicians. The goal is to improve the process of medical education and help students develop sophisticated doctoring skills. Koschmann joined the SIU faculty in 1988. He earned his doctorate at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, his master's degree at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and his bachelor's degree at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
Faith Y. Miller, William R. Bruns and Deb McCoy are the 2006-2007 Chapter Advisors of the Year as announced at the 76th Annual Greek Awards sponsored May 4 by the Inter-Greek Council. Honors went to Miller and McCoy for their work with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, including helping educate undergraduate members to be great citizen leaders. Recognition went to Bruns for his work with the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and efforts to educate the men of the fraternity. Miller is an associate professor in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts' School of Allied Health; Bruns is an information technology technical associate at the Student Center. McCoy is employed by the city of Carbondale and co-sponsors the sorority. The Student Development staff members who work with Greek Life, including Andy Morgan, coordinator of leadership programs and Greek life, and graduate assistants Dani Dencklau and Katrina Edwards, selected the Advisors of the Year. SIUC fraternities and sororities received a variety of awards for outstanding work during the past year as well.
