NotableDr. Laura Q. Rogers, an associate professor of internal medicine at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, has received a one-year grant to study the feasibility and effectiveness of a program to help breast cancer patients exercise. The study will evaluate how well a 12-week program enables breast cancer survivors to follow a regular exercise program. The grant from the Sons of the Confederate Veterans Brooks Medical Research Fund is $97,568. Betsy S. Brown, Curriculum and Instruction middle school methods instructor, is the recipient of the 2006 Olive Foster Award for promoting Illinois history. The $500 award recognizes full-time teachers for outstanding contributions to the study and teaching of state and local history. She is sponsor of a team from Carbondale Middle School that recently won first place in the performance category at the Illinois history contest held at SIUC. Her middle school teams have advanced to the national competition the past three years. Heewon Yang, assistant professor in Health Education and Recreation, was appointed as a member of the Examination Maintenance Committee at the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. He worked on test item development, reviewing, and screening for 2007 certification exam. He will also serve as a member of the council's task force committee to review and evaluate the current job analysis areas in therapeutic recreation certification exam. Yang will serve a three-year term through 2008. Barbara L. Shiplett, a teaching assistant in Health Education and Recreation, was recently elected a member-at-large representative of the American School Health Association Research Council. |
