A composer's recital under coordination of School of Music Professor Frank L. Stemper is at 7:30 p.m., today, April 19, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

SIUC alumnus Timothy Mooney brings his one-man show, "Criteria," to the Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater at 7:30 p.m., today, April 19. Admission is free.

 

A sushi demonstration and workshop – part of Asian Awareness Month – will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, April 20, in the Student Center's Old Main Restaurant. People attending can work alongside chefs while learning the art of making sushi. The event costs $6.25 and includes the demonstration, buffet and sushi. The SIUC Egyptian Suzuki School Twinkle Party is from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 20, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Paula M. Allison, an assistant instructor in the School of Music, is director. Admission is free.

 

The SIUC Symphonic Band, under the direction of conductor Andrew L. Tucker, an instructor in the School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $3 for the general public; $2 for students.

 

The "Phrenologist's Daughter" will be performed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 20-22, in Kleinau Theatre in the Communications Building. Performances begin at 8 p.m. each day, and deal with mature themes. Admission is $5 for the general public; $3 for students.

 

The New Arts Jazztet performs at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 21, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $3 for the general public; $2 for students.

 

The SIRIS Spring Yard Sale is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at 1003 S. Oakland St., in Carbondale. The annual spring event is hosted by the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service

 

The annual spring yard and craft sale sponsored by the SIUC Civil Service Council is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 22 in the Arena parking lot. Costs to sellers for space range from $25 to $35, and payment is due by 4 p.m., today, April 19. Sellers renting space on the day of the sale pay an additional $5. Proceeds go to the Civil Service Education Assistance Fund. The rain date is Sunday, April 23.

 

Agriculture Industry Day is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at the SIUC Farms Complex on Rowden Road. Sponsored by the College of Agricultural Sciences, the event features exhibits, and talks in the morning, including SIU President Glenn Poshard. Afternoon sessions feature various classes, including companion animal care, human nutrition, landscape design, campground design and commodity trading. Admission is free.

 

The 2006 Natural Bodybuilding Competition begins with preliminaries at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 22 at Shryock Auditorium. The finals begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the general public; $12 for SIUC students with valid student ID. Tickets are available at the SIU Ticket Office in the SIU Arena. Tickets may also be ordered by phone at 618/453-2000 or through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849.

 

The nationally ranked SIU women's softball team hosts Missouri Valley Conference foe Creighton in a doubleheader, Saturday, April, 22, at Charlotte West Stadium. The first game begins at noon. The Salukis also host Creighton in the series finale that begins at noon, Sunday. Admission is $4 for adults; $3 for faculty, staff, senior citizens and kids. SIUC students are free with a student ID.

 

The SIU men's tennis team will host a pair of matches against Missouri Valley Conference foes this weekend. The Salukis face Bradley at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 22, and Illinois State at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 23. The matches are at University Courts. The matches may be held at Sports Blast in case of inclement weather.

 

Spring Thing 2006: The MTVU Campus Invasion Tour has an outdoor concert from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 22, in the Upper Arena Fields. Gates open at 4 p.m. The concert features Motion City Soundtrack with special guests Straylightrun and hellogoodbye. Safety rules include no alcohol, no cans, no coolers, no weapons and no controlled substances. The MTVU village is open from noon to 5 p.m. The SIUC Student Programming Council is sponsoring the event.

 

The Friends of Morris Library Dinner is at 6 p.m., Sunday, April 23 at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center. Robert Coover, the author of more than 20 books, 10 plays and several screenplays is guest speaker. Annual Delta Awards will be presented to three people who have written, edited or published about the region with distinction. The cost of the dinner is $40. Illinois State Representative and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) presents a lecture and discusses the state's spring legislative session at 4 p.m., Monday, April 24 in Student Center Ballroom D. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute is sponsoring the event. Admission is free.

 

Petra Breyerova, deputy editor-in-chief of the Czech Business Weekly, discusses obstacles faced by the Czech media in a lecture, "From Communist Mouthpiece to Corporation Servants: The 16-year Struggle of the Czech Republic to Develop a Truly Free Press," at 4:30 p.m., Monday, April 24 in Communications Building, Room 1032. The event is sponsored by the Global Media Research Center.

 

The SIUC Wind Ensemble under the direction of conductor Christopher L. Morehouse, an assistant professor in the School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 24, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is $3 for the general public; $2 for students.

 

The SIUC Chamber Singers perform under the direction of Susan Davenport Stewart, an assistant professor in the School of Music, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, at Shryock Auditorium.
