The SIU women's softball team hosts Evansville in a doubleheader today, Wednesday, April 16, at Charlotte West Stadium. The first game begins at 4 p.m.

 

The SIUC Jazz Combos, under the direction of coordinator Philip Brown, an associate professor in the SIUC School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 16, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is free. The event is part of the SIUC New Music Festival "Outside the Box."

 

Veteran journalist David E. Sanger presents a lecture, "China, Japan & India: The Rise of America's Strategic Competitors," at 7 p.m., today, Wednesday, April 16, in the SIU School of Law Auditorium. Sanger is chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times. Admission is free.

 

The registration deadline for attending the Second Annual Diversity Conference at SIU is 3 p.m., Thursday, April 17. The April 22 conference will focus on "Issues and Challenges in Teaching First Generation Students." This year's conference is the result of discussions at campus diversity meetings and builds upon last year's session, which focused on diversity in the classroom, according to Seymour L. Bryson, the University's associate chancellor for diversity. The conference is open to SIUC faculty and staff. Pre-registration is required for lunch at the conference. "Morristown: In the Air and Sun," a film examining issues of "immigration, factory flight and the organized demand for economic justice" will be shown at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17, in the SIU School of Law auditorium. A discussion with Fran Ansley, principal humanities adviser to filmmaker Anne Lewis, follows the film. Prior to the film, a "Know your Labor and Employment Law Rights" presentation is at 5:30 p.m. also in the law school auditorium. Admission to all of the events is free.

 

The SIUC Symphonic Band, with conductor Andrew L. Tucker, an instructor in the School of Music, performs at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $7.50 for the general public; $5 for students.

 

"fASscInAtioN," an Asian fashion show of traditional and contemporary fashions from nearly seven different countries in Asia, is at 7 p.m., Friday, April 18, in Quigley Hall Auditorium. Admission is free. The event is part of Asian American Heritage Month.

 

The SIU women's softball team hosts Creighton in a three-game series this weekend at Charlotte West Stadium. The Salukis play a doubleheader that begins at noon, Saturday, April 19, and a single game to close out the series at noon, Sunday, April 20.

 

The SIU men's tennis team hosts two teams this weekend to close out the regular season. The Salukis face Bradley at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 19, and Illinois State at 10 a.m., Sunday, April 20. The matches are at University Courts, but will be held at Sports Blast in Carbondale in case of inclement weather. Admission is free.

 

The School of Music offers a free piano concert by visiting artist Ina Selvelieva beginning at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 19, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Selvelieva, a native of Bulgaria, is an SIUC alumna. She earned her doctoral degree in May 2007 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and her master's degree here. Her undergraduate degree is from the State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria. Currently Selvelieva is associated with the David Adler Music and Arts Center in Libertyville, an arts school offering private instruction. She is teaching piano this semester at UW-Madison.

 

The Tony Award-winning musical "Gypsy," is presented at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 19, in Shryock Auditorium. The musical is based on the memoirs of entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, and examines ambition, jealousy, family relationships and the loss of innocence. Tickets are $45, $35 and $10. SIUC students receive a $5 discount with proper ID. Children 12 and under receive a $5.00 discount. The 2005 film, "The Great Water," based on a Yugoslavian best-selling children's book, will be shown at 7 p.m., Sunday, April 20, in Davis Auditorium (Wham 105) as part of the University Honors Program's International Film Series. Admission is free.

 

The Asian & Middle Eastern Cultural Fair is at 7 p.m., Monday, April 21, in the Student Center Ballroom A. The fair offers the opportunity to learn more about Middle Eastern and Asian Cultures. Admission is free. The event is part of Asian American Heritage Month.

 

The SIU women's softball team hosts Tennessee-Martin in a doubleheader Tuesday, April 22, at Charlotte West Stadium. The first game begins at 3 p.m.

 

Law enforcement experts will talk about domestic violence laws and victims services during a clinic beginning at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, at the auditorium in the Lesar Law Building. The SIUC Department of Public Safety and the SIU School of law will present the clinic, hosted by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office. The event is free, and open to the public. Topics will include domestic violence laws, crime victims compensation, the Automated Victim Notification Network and identity theft.

 

Middle Eastern Myth Busters, a panel discussion that offers real truths about Middle Eastern cultures and its people is at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, in the Student Center Mississippi Room. Admission is free. The event is part of Asian American Heritage Month.

 

"The Full Monty," directed and choreographed by J. Thomas Kidd, an assistant professor in the Department of Theater, runs from Wednesday, April 23, through Sunday, April 27, at McLeod Theater. The April 23-26 shows begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday, April 27 matinee show starts at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens, and $6 for students. The theater box office is open from noon to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and one hour before each performance. Call 618/453-3001 for more information or for credit card purchases.
