Coming eventsA stage favorite popularized by a motion picture, one of the country's leading comedians, events celebrating Asian Awareness Month, and the annual Stars of Altgeld highlight events on campus this week. Steel Magnolias will be performed on the Shryock Auditorium stage at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 15. The production, also a hit motion picture starring Julia Roberts, focuses on the lives of six southern women in the setting of a beauty shop. Larry the Cable Guy brings his zany outlook on life to Carbondale at 8 p.m., Friday, April 15 at the SIU Arena. An evening of Asian poetry is will be presented at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18 in the Big Muddy Room at the Student Center. Solo competition winners from the School of Music are featured in the annual favorite, Stars of Altgeld, at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19. The performance, part of the Southern Illinois Symphony Series, celebrates the reopening of the beautifully restored Altgeld Hall, which is home to the School of Music. Leading the orchestra and soloists is Australian-born guest conductor, Michael Goodwin, the music director of California's Apollo Orchestra and Chorus.
