Africa Week 2005 celebration under way

"Remembering our roots" is the theme of Africa Week 2005 celebration under way at SIUC.

Tasty treasures -- Awa Dieng, a master’s student in Workforce Education originally from Senegal, West Africa, takes time from her busy schedule Wednesday to help serve some delicious dishes to faculty, staff and students attending the Taste of Africa Food Fair in the Student Center ballrooms. No one had trouble finding a favorite dish to enjoy. The event is part of the ongoing Africa Week 2005 celebration.

Events earlier in the week for the 31st annual celebration included American students speaking on their experience in Africa, an African bazaar, a panel discussion on the role of Africans in Africa and the Diaspora, and a food fair earlier today.

From 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, there is an Open Mic Poetry and Drum night in the Student Center’s Big Muddy Room.

A cultural show is set from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 15, in Student Center Ballroom D, and features performances by Banky, a Nigerian singer from New York, and Urban Credo, a multi-ethnic dance group. The event is free.

The final event is a banquet that starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Old Main Restaurant in the Student Center. Tickets are $12 for African Students Council members, $15 for the general public, and $6 for children 6 to 10 years old. For tickets, call the African Students Council at 618/351-0936.
