Mizanur R. Miah, director of the School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Services, attended the 2005 Social Work National Congress, March 16-18 in Washington, D.C. Miah was one of six delegates from Illinois; the Social Work National Congress is attended by a highly selective/nominated group of delegates from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The delegates are involved in social work education, research, training, and policy-making. Miah was nominated to the Social Work Congress by the National Association of Deans and Directors of the Schools of Social Work (NADDSSW) – and is one of 25 delegates selected from 189 member-schools. Miah was one of the six delegates from Illinois who met with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.

Lori J. Van Horn, Child Development Laboratory director, and Melissa R. Viernow, a CDL Master Infant/Toddler instructor, received a Quality Counts grant from Child Care Resource and Referral. The $4,000 grant will help with the purchase of new cribs and toddler cots for the lab.

Christian Sebastian Loh, assistant professor in Curriculum and Instruction, will present his paper, "Guitar vs. Piano: The Effects of Instrument Sound in Web-Based Ear Training" at the American Educational Research Association 2005 annual conference in Montreal, April 11-15.

Jerry P. Becker, professor, Curriculum and Instruction, has accepted an invitation to give a keynote address at the Fourth Chicago Lesson Study Conference on May 20 at DePaul University and the Chicago Teachers Academy. He will also serve on a panel of U.S. and Japanese mathematics educators to discuss four public research lessons dealing with algebraic reasoning through problem solving at the elementary school level.

The School of Social Work is hosting a Senior Fulbright Scholar, Iftekhar Chowdhur. He will be on campus until July. Chowdhury is a professor and former chairperson of the Sociology Department at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. He is currently doing research on international migration with Mizanur R. Miah, director of the School of Social Work.
