Reed G. Williams, professor and vice chairman for educational affairs in the surgery department at the SIU School of Medicine, is the 2006 recipient of the John P. Hubbard Award from the not-for-profit National Board of Medical Examiners. Award recipients are recognized for "making significant contributions to the pursuit of excellence in the field of evaluation in medicine," according to the organization. Williams received his master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University. Hubbard Award committee chair Dr. Cyril M. Grum wrote that Williams "has made outstanding contributions to the field of evaluation in medicine through his work to measure clinical competence using objective, scientific methods. He has a long and impressive record in the development of evaluation methods and measurement techniques focusing on assessment of clinical competence. Dr. Williams is a nationally recognized leader in the use of standardized patients for teaching and assessment and was among the pioneers of the deployment of standardized patients for large-scale assessment purposes."
