Composer Augusta Read Thomas presents a discussion, "Learning in Retirement," at 6:30 p.m., today, Wednesday, March 28, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is free. The event is part of the "Outside the Box" Music Festival.

 

The Altgeld Chamber Players perform the work of composers Augusta Read Thomas and School of Music lecturer Kathleen C. Ginther at 7:30 p.m., today, Wednesday, March 28, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is $6.50 for the general public and $3 for students.

 

Amelia Katanski, a professor at Kalamazoo College, presents a lecture, "Learning to Write Indian," at 4 p.m., Thursday, March 29, in the SIUC Student Center Illinois Room. The discussion looks at the impact of the Indian boarding school experience on the American Indian literary tradition through an examination of turn-of-the-century student essays, autobiographies, and other works. The discussion is part of the Humanities Forum yearlong theme, "Ethnicity and the Humanities." Admission is free.

 

Professor Nilanjana Bardhan presents "Indian Women Transitioning to Western Culture," at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 29, in the SIUC Student Center Ballroom A. The event is part of Women's History Month. Admission is free.

 

The School of Music's Faculty Jazz Quartet performs original compositions at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 29, at Shryock Auditorium. The jazz quartet is comprised of associate professor Robert E. Allison, trumpet; associate professor Philip Brown, bass; lecturer Ronald E. Coulter, percussion, and assistant professor, Tyler K. Kuebler, saxophone. Admission is $4 for the general public, $2 for students. The event is part of the "Outside the Box" New Music Festival.

 

Abani Samal, a geologist/geostatistican with Denver-based Pincock, Allen and Holt, presents "From Moose-Pasture to Money," a lecture on making a mining project from scratch at 3 p.m., Friday, March 30, in Parkinson Laboratory, room 101F.

 

The SIU women's tennis team hosts teams Friday and Saturday. The Salukis host Evansville at 4 p.m., Friday, March 30, and Northern Illinois at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 31 at University Courts. The matches will be held at Sports Blast in Carbondale in case of inclement weather. Admission is free.

 

Acclaimed photographer Steven Benson presents his 1999 photo essay, "The Cost of Power in China: The Three Gorges Dam and the Yangtze River Valley," at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 30, in Lawson Hall, room 101. Admission is free.

 

"Widespread Panic" hits Carbondale for the first time since 2000 when it performs at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 30, at the SIU Arena. Tickets prices range from $30 to $27.50; SIUC students can purchase tickets for $22.50 at the SIU Arena box office. Tickets may also be ordered through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849, at any Ticketmaster outlet, or in person at the SIU Arena ticket office or the Student Center central ticket office.

Alfred W. McCoy, an historian who specializes in CIA covert operations, the global drug trade, colonial empires in Southeast Asia and the modern-day Phillipines, discusses how the CIA developed and has used psychological torture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the auditorium of SIUC's Hiram Lesar Law Building. McCoy is the J.R.W. Smail Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Admission is free.

 

Illinois House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie discusses her nearly three decades in the state legislature at 7 p.m., Monday, April 2, in Student Center Ballroom D. Admission is free.

 

SIUC Fashion Design and Merchandising alums Nicole Eitmant, who is with Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lisa Randolph, who is with A Wish Come True, discuss their careers at 7 p.m., Monday, April 2, in Brown Auditorium, Parkinson Laboratory, room 124. Admission is free.

 

Xiaosi Yang, an Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholar, discusses China's growth and "The Global Significance of China's Rise," at 7 p.m., Monday, April 2, in the Student Center's Ohio Room. Admission is free.

 

The School of Music Faculty Chamber Ensemble performs "Neoteric & Friends," at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 2, at the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. The ensemble, with lecturer Jennifer M. Presar, horn; assistant professor Melissa A. Mackey, bassoon; and assistant professor Eric Lenz, cello, perform the music of special guest composer Bernard Hoffer, along with friends, associate professor Heidi Louise Williams, piano; professor Michael Barta, violin; teaching assistant Janka Mekis, violin; assistant professor Meng-Chung Chi, viola; professor and distinguished scholar Eric P. Mandat, clarinet, and associate professor Philip Brown. Admission is free. The event is part of the Outside the Box New Music Festival.

 

The fourth annual Research Town Meeting & Fair is from 3:30 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the Student Center Ballrooms. Information tables from various units on campus will highlight current research. SIU President Glenn Poshard speaks at 4 p.m., followed by a short presentation about research on campus.

 

Janice Misurell-Mitchell, flute/composer, and Dane Richeson, percussion, perform at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall.
