Dr. Michael W. Neumeister, associate professor of plastic surgery at the SIU School of Medicine, gave the Godina Lecture at the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery's (ASRM) annual meeting in January in Puerto Rico. The distinguished lecture, the highest honor by the ASRM, is given annually by a microsurgeon who has demonstrated leadership, innovation and ongoing commitment to the field of microsurgery. Neumeister was the 2004 recipient of the Godina Traveling Fellowship and the lecture marks the conclusion of the fellowship. During the fellowship, Neumeister visited centers in Romania, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Canada, Taiwan and the United States, where he learned as well as taught various microsurgery techniques.

Neumeister joined SIU's faculty in 1997. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, and his medical degree at the University of Toronto. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1996, a microsurgery fellowship at Harvard University's Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, also in 1996, and a hand and microsurgery fellowship at SIU in 1997.

Nancy Calvert, director of financial aid for the SIU School of Medicine, has been elected to a three-year term as president of the Illinois Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. The association supports and educates financial aid administrators at post-secondary institutions in Illinois.

Calvert joined the SIU School of Medine in 1979. She earned her bachelor's degree in education at Northern Illinois University.
