Text messaging alert sign-up availableSIUC students, faculty and staff may now sign up for the University's new wireless emergency notification system. The system allows users to receive SIUC Alerts via text-messages and e-mail. To sign up for the texting service, log on to the SIUC homepage at www.siuc.edu and look for the link to "SIUC Alert — Wireless Emergency Notification System." As of Tuesday, March 4, 2,166 users had signed up for the service, according to SIUC Public Safety Director Todd D. Sigler. After following the link, the user needs to provide their SIUC ID, which is the portion of their campus email address preceding the @ sign. The user will then be able to type in up to three text-enabled telephone numbers and one e-mail address where they would like to receive alerts from the system. A link to the sign-up page is here. Most questions about the WENS service, including who to contact for technical support, are answered under Frequently Asked Questions on the emergency notification system Web page.
