Fourteen named Rickert-Ziebold finalistsThe School of Art and Design at SIUC named 14 finalists for the coveted Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award competition for 2008. The competition is open to senior art students. A jury chooses the finalists based on a slide presentation of a body of the students' work. From now until April 21, when the winner or winners are chosen, students have a chance to assemble a display of their work in the Surplus Gallery at the Glove Factory on Washington Avenue. Students may make a new work for the competition, or choose previous work. Many students make at least one new piece of art for the competition, sometimes incorporating previously finished pieces as well. The award is approximately $20,000. Last year, a single winner, Sarah Vaughn from Olney, won the entire award. Most years, the selection jury names multiple winners. The award commemorates Joseph Rickert, a prominent lawyer and former state senator from Waterloo, who loved the arts. His friendship with Delyte W. Morris and Henry W. Shyrock led him to appreciate the vital place of SIUC in the artistic culture of Southern Illinois. His family established the award in 1974 in his memory. The announcement of winners is at 3:30 p.m. on April 21 at the Surplus Gallery. The finalists' exhibit runs from April 21 to April 26, with an exhibition reception on April 25.
