Rivera memorial poetry contest entries soughtUndergraduate and graduate level poets may enter the 2007 Roxana Rivera Memorial Poetry Contest, sponsored by the English department and the Women's Studies program. The annual contest honors Roxana Rivera (1977-2003), a graduate student in creative writing at SIUC in 2003, when she died in car accident. Rivera held a bachelor's degree in women's studies and English from California State University, Long Beach. While at SIUC, Roxana was a PROMPT Scholar and a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of English. The poetry contest is open to all students currently enrolled at SIUC. Poems should address this year's theme "All a Woman Can Be." Top prizewinners will receive gift cards valued at $80, $40 and $25, respectively. There is no entry fee but there is a limit of three poems per entrant. Poems, each on a separate piece of paper, along with cover letters that include the contestants' names, local and e-mail addresses, phone numbers, poem titles and academic status (undergraduate or graduate student) must be sent to Allison E. Joseph at the English department (mail code 4503) by Friday, March 23. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on March 30.
