Father Joseph A. Brown, director of SIUC's Black American Studies program, presents “A Meditation on Lynching,” at 7 p.m., (today) Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the SIU School of Law's Lesar Law Building Auditorium. The event is part of Black History Month.

 

Willamette University Professor Peter Wogan presents a lecture, “A Mexican-American Dream: A Vision of Wealth and a Dream about God,” at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 1, in the Student Center's Illinois Room. The Humanities Forum, in a joint venture with the program in Latino and Latin American Studies, is hosting the program.

 

The SIUC Egyptian Suzuki School featuring strings solo recitals, under the direction of assistant instructor Paula M. Allison, is from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 1, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Admission is free.

 

The Missouri Valley Conference champion women's basketball team hosts Missouri State at 7:05 p.m., Thursday, March 1, at the SIU Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, youths, faculty and staff. SIUC student tickets are free with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.

 

SIUC alumnus Nancy Palm is presenting a lecture at noon, Friday, March 2, in the University Museum Auditorium. Palm's discussion is "Unsettling Identities: Native Americans in Thomas Cole's National Landscapes." She received a bachelor's degree summa cum laude from the Art History program in 2001, and a master's in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2005. She is currently a doctoral student at Indiana University, and holder of the Ruth Halls Fellowship in American Art.

 

The Saluki men's baseball team hosts Northern Illinois in a three-game series this weekend at Abe Martin Field. SIUC faces the Huskies at 2 p.m., Friday, March 2; 1 p.m., Saturday, March 3; and 1 p.m., Sunday, March 4. Admission is free.

 

Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women, performs at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 2, at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $4.50 for students, and may be be ordered through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849, at any Ticketmaster outlet, or in person at the SIU Arena ticket office or the Student Center central ticket office.

 

The Saluki women's softball team, 12-3 this year, opens its home schedule this weekend with the annual Kay Brechtelsbauer Southern Classic. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for faculty, staff, senior citizens and high school students and younger. SIUC students are free with a valid SIU student ID. Upcoming tournament games at Charlotte West Stadium are:

  • Saturday, March 3: Noon, Ball State; 2 p.m., Ohio.
  • Sunday, March 4: 3 p.m., Western Illinois; 5 p.m., Indiana.

 

The women's basketball team closes out the regular season on "Senior Day" when it hosts Wichita State at 2:05 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at the SIU Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, youths, faculty and staff. SIUC student tickets are free with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.

 

The 14th annual IOTA Comedy Jam is presented at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 3, at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $10

 

"The Stars of Altgeld," featuring members of the St. Petersburg chamber orchestra "Credo Sinfonietta," will perform with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, at Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $19 for adults, $13 for those older than 60 and under 15, and free for SIUC students with a valid SIU student ID. To purchase tickets, visit Ticketmaster or call 866/646-8849. The group will also perform for children during the "Klassics for Kids" concert on Tuesday, March 6, at 10 a.m. in Altgeld Hall Room 112, and for the community at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, at Carbondale's First United Methodist Church.The recitals at Altgeld and First United are free and donations will be accepted at First United.

 

Former U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix presents a lecture, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, in Student Center Ballrooms C and D. Blix, who is chairman of the International Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction, will present the 2007 SIU School of Law Hiram H. Lesar Lecture. The lecture is free and open to the public.

 

Neil Simon's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, "Lost in Yonkers," will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, in Shryock Auditorium. Tickets are $26, $20 for senior citizens 60 and older and children 15 and younger. Tickets may be ordered through Ticketmaster at 866/646-8849, at any Ticketmaster outlet, or in person at the SIU Arena ticket office or the Student Center central ticket office.
