Jerry Becker, professor in Curriculum and Instruction, presented lectures in Japan at Nara University of Education and Tsukuba University Jan. 4-12. In his lectures he characterized the Japanese approach to teaching mathematics from the eyes of a foreign researcher. The objective was to have an impact on the Japanese' own image of their teaching of mathematics. The audiences were graduate students in mathematics education and faculty members. He also gave a short talk on the occasion of the 77th birthday (a tradition in Japan) of Professor Tatsuro Miwa, a well-known Japanese mathematics educator with whom he collaborated in cross-cultural research over several years.

Elisabeth Reichert, professor in the School of Social Work, will present the Third Carolyn Freeze Baynes Institute for Social Justice Lecture at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. on April 4. Reichert's lecture is entitled "Contemporary Human Rights: Challenges and Promises." Reichert is author of the acclaimed book, “Social Work and Human Rights: A Foundation for Policy and Practice, “published in 2003 by Columbia University Press. Her second book on human rights is in press.
