Science dean finalist visits next week

The second of four candidates for dean of the College of Science will visit campus next week.

Jay C. Means, associate director of the Environmental Research Center at Western Michigan University, will be on campus Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 19-20. His presentation and open forum, "Science in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities for Public Universities," is set for Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Life Science III, room 1059.

Means earned a bachelor of science degree in education, master of arts in food chemistry and a doctorate in food chemistry from the University of Illinois. He also earned a master of arts degree in curriculum development from Concordia Teacher's College.

Charles J. Amlaner Jr., founding chairperson of the Department of Ecology & Organismal Biology at Indiana State University, was on campus last week. Michael S. Jacobson, chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center, will visit campus Feb. 22-23. A fourth candidate will visit at a date yet to be determined.

The candidates are vying for the position left vacant by Jack Parker, who retired last year. Professor James Tyrrell is serving as interim dean.
