Maple Syrupin' breakfast and workshop setIf you want to know the work that goes into making maple syrup - and sample some of the goodies - SIUC's Touch of Nature Environmental Center has an event lined up for those with even the sweetest of teeth. Touch of Nature is hosting a "Maple Syrupin' Pancake Breakfast and Workshop” from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 17. A pancake breakfast will be followed by a two-hour maple syrup workshop. Environmental center staff will provide insightful lectures on tree physiology, maple tree identification, legends and lore surrounding maple syrup harvest, and techniques used in making maple syrup. And through hands-on and cooperative experiences, participants will learn the tradition, folklore, and pioneer skills of sugaring off. The rain date is Feb. 24. The cost is $12 for adults; $6 for children 5 to 10 years old. Children under 5 are free. Proceeds will go to helping students attend workshops offered by Touch of Nature's Environmental Education program. For registration and directions call 618/453-1121. Touch of Nature is 9 miles south of Carbondale.
