Smoke-free policy in effectThe University's smoking policy steering committee reminds everyone that in compliance with the new Smoke-Free Illinois Act that took effect Jan. 1, all University buildings are smoke-free along with a 15-foot perimeter around all doors, windows, exits and ventilation intakes. The public can report violations of the smoke-free zone by contacting the Illinois Department of Public Health's Smoke-free Illinois Complaint Line at 866/973-4646 or online at www.smoke-free.illinois.gov/ .Those violating the state law could be subject to fines of $100-$250. The Live-Free-Tobacco Free program at SIUC's Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, along with the smoking policy steering committee, is assisting with the transition. SIUC was already smoke-free but the previous smoke-free zone extended 25 feet around building exteriors. No smoking' signs are posted throughout the campus. Those wanting information about how to quit smoking can contact the American Lung Association's Tobacco Quit Line at 866/QUIT-YES (866/784-8937) or visit the Jackson County Health Department Web site at www.jchdonline.org. For more information about the SIUC Live Free-Tobacco Free program, contact the Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development at 618/453-1262.
