Medical school sponsors Ethnic Heritage DayAn Ethnic Heritage Day celebration celebrating African-American cultures will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. The event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the medical school's main building at 801 N. Rutledge St. The program includes a talk by Springfield resident Robert Moore, who served as a U.S. marshal from 1994-2002, and then as chief of police in Jackson, Miss., before retiring in 2005. He will present "The Presidents Men: Black United States Marshals" a traveling exhibit that chronicles 133 years of service of African-American men as presidential appointed U.S. marshals and deputy marshals during the agency's 219-year history. There also will be cultural displays and artifacts as well as tasting of foods from African-American cultures. Ethnic Heritage Day celebrations are held regularly at the medical school to share information about various ethnic cultures. The events are organized by SIU's Diversity, Multicultural and Minority Affairs office. For more information, contact Patricia Davis at 217/545-7243 weekdays.
