Visiting artist Brad Schweiger holds a ceramics exhibition featuring about a dozen pieces of his work this week, Feb. 4-9, at The Surplus Gallery in the old Glove Factory, 432 S. Washington Ave. The gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week. A closing reception is 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8. Schweiger is associate director for the School of Art, and a professor at Ohio University.
Art historian Diane Douglas brings her expertise on the American craft movement in a lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Browne Auditorium. She will be highlighting her research with independent scholar Vicki Halper on the social history of the American craft movement from 1945 to 2000. Douglas is the executive director of CityClub, a civic organization in Seattle, Wash., and is a past director at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Wash. She is at SIUC through the School of Art and Design as part of the Visiting Artist program. Admission is free.
The Global Media Research Center sponsors a lecture by Lisa Nakamura at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Communications Building, room 1032. Nakamura's lecture is "Race, Class, and Gender in Multiplayer Online Game Environments." She is an associate professor at the Institute of Communication Research and Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois. The lecture is free, and open to the public.
Performance spontaneity is guaranteed with "Yes; And …" which begins at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Kleinau Theatre in the Communications Building. Performances are also scheduled for 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9. Ticket prices are $7 for the public; $5 for students.
The Saluki men's and women's track teams host the McDonald's Invitational, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8 and 9, at the Student Recreation Center. Field events begin at 4 p.m. Friday, with field events beginning Saturday at 10 a.m., and track events starting at 10:30 a.m. The competition is the final home meet of the year.
The SIU women's basketball team hosts Missouri State at 7:05 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, at the SIU Arena. The game is the second annual "Pink Out" game, with proceeds going for breast cancer awareness. All tickets are $2, with $1 going to the Southern Illinois Healthcare "Women with Hope" support group. The first 1,000 fans will receive pink shirts, and all breast cancer survivors get in free, and are invited to attend a pre-game reception in the Arena's upper concourse. The Salukis will wear pink uniforms for the game.
The Heartland Honor Band, an annual band festival concert, performs at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Shryock Auditorium. Admission is free. The band is under direction of Christopher L. Morehouse, an assistant professor in SIUC's School of Music.
The SIU women's basketball team hosts Wichita State at 2:05 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, at the SIU Arena. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens, SIUC faculty and staff, and children. SIUC student tickets are free with a valid SIUC student ID on game day.
The Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society, featuring several members of SIUC's School of Music faculty, performs at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane. Featured are assistant professor Junghwa Lee, piano; professor and distinguished scholar Eric P. Mandat, clarinet; professor Michael Barta, violin, and assistant professor Eric Lenz, cello. Admission is $13 for the general public; $3 for students.
The Saluki men's basketball team plays at Creighton at 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10. The game is being televised on ESPNU.
Award-winning author Sean B. Carroll delivers SIUC's University Honors Program Lecture at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Student Center Auditorium. Carroll's book, "The Making of the Fittest: DNA and the Ultimate Forensic Record of Evolution," looks at new facts on evolution gathered from DNA evidence. Admission is free.
The Humanities Forum sponsors a talk by Rebecca Zorach, associate professor of Art History at the University of Chicago, at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11, in 221 Lawson. Her presentation, "'What the vast majority of people have to say is of absolutely no value whatsoever: Art as Excess and Obstacle." is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Humanities Forum speaker series, "Value, Values, and the Humanities."
The 2008 Journeys Productions: Bill A — which consists of short new plays by SIUC student playwrights — is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Christian H. Moe Laboratory Theater. Performances are also scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, and Saturday Feb. 16. Bill B performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, and Friday, Feb. 15, and 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17 The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and one hour before each performance.
