Emily J. Carter, interim director of SIUC's Office of Economic and Regional Development and director of Entrepreneurship and Business Development, is the recipient of a Coleman Foundation scholarship. Entrepreneurs Dorothy W. and J.D. Stetson Coleman endowed the Chicago-based foundation. She received a $400 award that allowed her to attend the 2007 conference of the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship earlier this month in Orlando, Fla. The mission of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship is to advance knowledge and foster business development through entrepreneurship education and research. "It's an honor to be able to go to a national conference of this caliber," said Carter. As part of her work at SIUC, Carter runs the Southern Illinois Entrepreneurship Center, which is a regional hub for coordinating entrepreneurship development activity. "Hopefully this experience will open doors for SIUC and create even more opportunities for the University's students, faculty and business community."
