"Underground Arts", a spoken word performance group, presents "Dr. King's Nightmare?" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Student Center Auditorium. The group explores the highly controversial episode of Boondocks: "Return of the King." Admission is free. The event is part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Week.

 

The Saluki men's basketball team plays at Missouri State at 7:05 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23. The game is being televised on Mediacom.

 

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura S. Washington is the keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Dinner at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Newman Center, 715 S. Washington St., Carbondale. The cross-cultural evening focuses on the continuing fight for social justice and the need to strive for fairness for everyone within campus and community. Special guests for the evening also include: Marilyn James, community relations officer for Carbondale; the Rev. Joseph A. Brown, professor and director for Black American Studies at SIUC; Dhrubodhi Mukherjee, School of Social work assistant professor; and Kouri Marshall, a graduate student in public administration at SIUC. Admission is free. The event is part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Week.

 

An open microphone night of performance is available to members of the University community at "Lift Every Voice: Spoken Word Extravaganza," at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, in the lower level of Grinnell Hall. Performances from the Africana Theater Lab and the Black Togetherness Organization are also planned. Admission is free. The event is part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Week.

 

The 1996 film, "Chronicle of a Disappearance," will be shown at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, in Davis Auditorium (Wham 105) as part of the University Honors Program's International Film Series. The Arabic film with English subtitles explores the effects of ghettoization and marginalization on the Palestinian psyche. Admission is free.

 

The Saluki men's basketball team hosts Evansville at 7:05 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the SIU Arena. Tickets in the upper bowl are $12 for adults, and $8 for children; $13 in the Big Dog section. Lower level seating is sold out.
